Back to part 1
In 1872, Yellowstone became the first National Park to be established. It wasn’t until over a hundred years later that the first national marine sanctuary was created off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in 1975.
Over 15% of the Earth’s land surface lies within protected national parks, far exceeding the 3% coverage for the ocean.
The international community has set a goal
to protect at least 10% of the ocean by 2020.
As of 2015
over 11,000 MPAs have been established,
covering approximately 3% of the world’s oceans.
However, many endangered
marine species migrate.
We need to create
multi-national marine corridors
to make MPAs more effective.
can help restore bio-diversity to our oceans.
In marine reserves where f ishing activity is restricted,
and laws are properly enforced, depleted species can recover in as little as 2–5 years.
